The Unicorn King

This year I received my best birthday gift to date. As I was getting ready for bed on my birthday, me mum knocked on the guest room door and handed me a final gift for my birthday, the silver tankard I got my dad on his last birthday back in 2020, which has the Wallace clan crest mounted on it.

It wasn’t the gift that moved me most, however; it was the moment of enlightenment that followed, when me mum pointed out the unicorn horn embedded in the crest. Although I was recently made aware that the Unicorn is the national animal of Scotland, I never took note of the horn – now so obvious to me – anchored in the crest. In the moment, my lack of past awareness made it feel as though the horn was manifesting before me peepers Harry Potter style, leaving me slack jawed and speechless.

It’s a running joke with friends and coworkers that I appreciate what unicorns stand for, and as a result I’ve received more unicorn themed gifts and deserts than I care to admit. Unlike my young counterparts with crusty button noses, however, my pro-unicorn platform came later in life, around the time I came to acknowledge my intuition, that guiding light in me that I’d fought and ignored when I was younger, back when I was more impressionable, ego-driven, and didn’t fully understand the consequences of my actions.

Outside of my fondness for the color sparkle, unicorns resonate with me because they embody the values that I – and Scotsmen before me – strive to live by as my awareness of self, life, and others matures…

Sh!t glitter. When in doubt, live like a unicorn. Be unique, daring, kind, and inviting (but don’t be afraid to shank a bitch with a horn if they come for you). Unleash your mane, be mystical in your might, and protect what is pure… And who knows? Once these principles are mastered, you might achieve unicorn utopia and inspire another mere mortal to believe in magic again.
